Ah yes, the glamorous life of a writer. Well, if you enjoy being locked in a stare-down with a computer and spending hours isolated from the rest of the world, then you might consider it glamorous.desk

This is my desk. Very unglamorous. But wonder of all wonders, you can actually see the surface of it. Despite the dirty lunch dish, open calendar, Ipad and other incidentals, my desk is not near as cluttered as it usually is. I mean, you should see it when I’m approaching a deadline. Yikes!

Design guru, Christopher Lowell, always said, “A cluttered space equals a cluttered mind.” And boy, is he right. Whenever my desk is cluttered, I start to feel overwhelmed. When I’m overwhelmed, I can’t write. So the best way to tackle that?

Clear off my desk.

Yes, it really works. And not just for desks. Taking control of our stuff actually gives us the sense of regaining control. And let me tell you, that’s an awesome feeling.

Your turn. Does clutter bother you? Or do you simply ignore it? Are you an organization junkie, with a place for everything and everything in its place? Oh, how I’d love to be that person.
